We were hiking before 7:00 AM and around ??? Medic, Bourbon, Bee-Dub caught Mike and I. Together we hiked to the border of Colorado and took this picture together. The young lady in front is Medic, next is yours truly, behind me is Mike, in the red shirt is Bee-Dub, and finally Bourbon (Medic's husband).
Here is a pic from my CDT GPS map program showing me on the border (the big red arrow on the blue line)!
On the way to Cumbres Pass we saw the steam engine train that runs from Chama to the pass twice daily. Here is a short video from the trail.
Following the train is this interesting vehicle. It puts out any fires started by the steam locomotive. According to the locals, sparks from the train keep the driver very busy! This winter and spring have been very dry so everyone is especially concerned about fires!
When we finally reached Cumbres Pass, it was fist bumps all around and I was inspired to take this picture:
These are our trekking poles, and I like to think of this as the thru-hiking equivalent of a “mic drop.” We hitched into town with a trail angel named Jolene and settled into some rooms at the Y-Motel. There are probably 20 hikers at this 12 room motel and only two cars in the parking lot. You can tell which rooms are occupied by hikers, because we leave the door wide open and just wander from room to room seeing who is here and how everyone is doing. Eight of us went do dinner together and celebrated the completion of New Mexico.
I’m taking a zero tomorrow and will be leaving on Wednesday morning. Stay tuned for details on the little town of Chama and all things HIKING!
